Scapa Flow

Scattered round Scapa flow are a number of towns and harbours.

Stromness

Stromness

Stromness is the second main town on Orkney, after Kirkwall, with a population of around 2000 folk. The ferry St Ola, berths here and most of the diving operations run from this harbour.

There are three pubs in the centre of town, together with a host of B&Bs. Stromness is the home port of the Halton.

Kirkwall, Scapa

Kirkwall is Orkney's main town and the commercial heart of the island. Facing south, the pier at Scapa is the nearest drop off point and home to the memorial for the men that died on the Royal Oak.

Lyness

Lyness was home to the main Naval base during the war, the remains of which remain today. The old oil pumping station has been converted into a museum making the pier a popular lunch time destination.

Burray

Tucked away behind the Churchill Barriers on the east side of the mainland, Burray is a quiet sleepy village. At the end of the pier, the old herring station has been converted into the Sands Hotel.
